View From Roraima

Next Photo - Los Nevados, Venezuela
this photo shows the view from near the top of Roraima, one of Venezuela's mysterious tepuis, the
tops of which are inhabited by plants that grow nowhere else on earth, as discovered by a National Geographic
expedition in the early 1900's, the first human visitation to Roraima.

This photo of Roraima was taken from near the top after a steep hike and scramble. Roraima Mountain is one of many uniquely featured mountains in Venezuela called "tepuis". Tepuis are unique in that these extremely ancient mountains with steep cliffsides have remained isolated against human and most animal visitation for millenia, allowing the plant life there to evolve separately from the surrounding lowlands. It is estimated that 50% of all plant life on the tepui tops is unique, found nowhere else in the world.
