The landscape photos on this page were taken just outside of Arequipa, Peru, near the villages of Paucarpata and Sabandia. A several hour excursion to the countryside like this can be arranged with a private taxi for about 40 soles (3.2 soles per US dollar in March of 2009). However, taxi fare from Arequipa to Paucarpata itself will cost only about 8 to 10 soles.

Sabandia has an old water-powered mill on display if you like that sort of thing. It has now become a favorite local tourist attraction and is one of Arequipa's BusTour's stops. So if you're interested in visiting, it would be best to time it to avoid this crowd.

The Peruvian countryside is full of Incan terraces that are still being cultivated today.

The Plaza de Armas in Arequipa has a large central fountain and pleasant landscaping.

So much of Peru is mountains and hillsides, so these kinds of terraces are essential to capturing and retaining the soil moisture and making the land viable for agriculture.
