| Arequipa is a great place to visit! Great climate, great scenery, friendly people, inexpensive food, lodging and transportation, and a good starting point for a number of excursions. Arequipa is known as The White City - La Ciudad Blanca - due to the white stone used in the construction of most of the city's buildings. The white stone is sillar, which is the volcanic rock common to the area. A number of active volcanoes surround Arequipa, the most notable ones being Chachani, Pichu Pichu, and the very symmetrical El Misti. Chachani is just over 6,000 meters high and El Misti just under. Both are visible clearly and beautifully from Arequipa, which rests at their feet at an elevation of 2320 meters above sea level. Arequipa's climate is the envy of many places around the world. On average, the city has 300 days of sunshine per year and only five days of rain. The annual average high temperature is 68 F with winter daytime temperatures only a few degrees cooler than summer daytime temperatures. Consequently, Arequipa is quite comfortable year round. The combination of pleasant temperatures and the rarity of inclimate weather make this area a pleasant place to live. On this page I've included some photos of Arequipa and the surrounding area with links to more Arequipa photos according to location. Arequipa is Peru's second largest city with a population of just over 1 million persons. It is a prosperous place with perhaps the largest
middle class of any Peruvian city. The cost of living here is low. Meal prices can range from 6 soles for the fixed menu in
less expensive eateries to 30 to 40 soles for a dinner at the city's better restaurants. At 2009 exchange rates of around 3.2 soles per US dollar,
these are great prices for the traveler. And there is no shortage of choices of restaurants of many different kinds:
Italian, Chinese, Turkish, Moroccan, Argentinian, and of course, Peruvian - just to name a few. Also, this city has perhaps the highest ration of taxis
to inhabitants, making transportation very inexpensive. One can travel across town for a mere 4 soles during daytime hours.
Many people believe that Arequipa's Plaza de Armas is the most beautiful in Peru. I would agree. The plaza is also noted for having the largest cathedral of any in the country - spanning the entire block on one of the Plaza's four sides. The remaining three sides are lined with beautifully constructed buildings with open balconies lined with restaurants on two of the Plaza's sides and on the third, an Artesania market.
