Arequipa's Plaza de Armas is one of the most pleasant I've encountered in South America. It's a very pleasant place to sit, relax, and take a little sun. It is a popular place for Arequipenan mothers, fathers, or mothers and fathers to bring their children and have their photos taken next to the fountain. As these photos of Arequipa, Peru will show, the entire length of one side of their Plaza de Armas consists of a large Cathedral. The other three sides of the plaza is lined with beautiful Spanish colonial architecture, two sides of which have second-story balcony restaurants where one can sit and dine or have a beer and enjoy Arequipa's beautiful climate and scenery. Arequipa is a modern city with a large, thriving middle-class population. At 2300 meters elevation in the high-desert region of Peru, the climate is marvelous, with approximately 300 days of sunshine per year with daytime temperatures that do not vary much from the mid-60s to mid-70s degrees Fahrenheit.

The cener of the Plaza has a large fountain - very popular with the children and pigeons, both of which flock to the Plaza.

The three sides of the Plaza not occupied by the Cathedral are lined by balconied buildings with many, many restaurants, an artisan's gallery, and superb views of both the Plaza and Cathedral.

The Plaza is THE meeting place for locals and tourists alike. It's extremely popular and always filled with people.

Hawkers sell any number of goods here, but without the pressure typical of Cusco and other popular tourist destinataions. Examples of a typical day's sampling of things being sold: photos, phone calls on cellulars, cups of jello, ice cream, grain to feed the pigeons, snacks, shoeshines, and bubble blowing kits for kids.
