| Butterflies are a universal symbol of delicacy and softness. They are a colorful and beautiful part of our world, and therefore make excellent subjects of nature photography. Obtaining natural looking close-up images of butterflies can be a bit difficult. The subjects often don't stay in one place long and they're often skittish when approached. Most of these butterfly photos were taken at the butterfly houses in Niagara Falls, Ontario, Cambridge, Ontario or the Hortus Botanicus butterfly house in Amsterdam. All have excellent and extensive collections of butterflies, bred and raised on site. Some were taken in my own garden around my house. Others were taken at a new butterfly exhibit in Aguas Caliente, Peru. | These close-up butterfly photos were taken with either a Canon EOS20D, EOS50D, or EOS60D (all digital SLRs) with a Sigma 105mm macro lens, sometimes with extension tubes. The Sigma lens, when mounted on the Canon SLRs yields an operational focal length of about 170mm, giving the photographer the opportunity to obtain macro images of subjects from greater distances.  Hummingbird Moth #8335 Not a butterfly, but a moth. Hummingbird Moths can be mistaken for actual hummingbirds. They grow to two inches in length and feed on the nectar of flowers, hovering above or alongside them just as a hummingbird does. |
