Eilean Donan Castle is located on a small tidal island of the same name. The island is at the confluence of three lochs: Loch Duich, Loch Long, and Loch Alsh. The castle is one of the most famous icons of Scotland and is surrounded by truly magnificent scenery. The castle itself, along with the surrounding scenery and its location near the Isle of Skye, makes Eilean Donan Castle one of the most visited sites in the Scottish Highlands. Despite the castle's fame and its imposing facade, which is evocative of so many of its medieval castle kin, this castle was built in the early 1900s utilizing much of the ruins from a previous castle located there and destroyed by military force in 1719.
