The construction of Elgin Cathedral began in the year 1224. Expansions and reconstructions occurred over the following (nearly) 200 years. Historic Scotland, which maintains the property, describes it as one of the finest architectural sights in Scotland. Of the list of ancient abbeys and cathedrals listed to the left, Elgin Cathedral is in fact, perhaps the finest. The cathedral is located in the town of Elgin (with the "g" sound pronounced like again), approximately 40 miles east of Inverness.
