Photos of Little Finland in Nevada

Site-Map
This page has photos of Little Finland in the Gold Butte region of Nevada. Gold Butte is roughly 45 miles southwest of Mesquite in the Mojave Desert. Little Finland is a scenic area of red Aztec sandstone eroded into bizarre shapes, making the area a favorite of photographers. The area of interest is relatively small at about 1 mile long by less than a half mile wide, so it doesn't take long to explore. To explore well, however, it does require a bit of scrambling over rocks and boulders. Also, the 45 miles from Mesquite will take well over an hour to travel due to the rough roads into the area. Although 4WD is recommended, it's probably not required. But a vehicle with high clearance and very good tires is a must if going all the way to Little Finland. The road to Whitney Pocket in Gold Butte has rough pavement, so is easy traveling. Beyond Whitney Pockets, the Gold Butte Road and others are quite rocky, rough and very slow going. A good assortment of all the maps needed to explore the various areas within Gold Butte is available at Bird and Hike. I strongly recommend getting these maps and marking mileages between turns to help you navigate into the region. Otherwise, follow these directions. Take exit 112 from I-15, turn right on the first road after crossing the bridge over the Virgin River - this is Gold Butte Road (GBR). Take the paved GBR to Whitney Pockets; the pavement ends here and GBR is very rocky and rough thereafter. Go 3.9 miles generally SW to Mud Wash North Rd (MWN). Turn right onto MWN and continue SW for 3.2 miles to Mud Wash Rd. Turn right and follow Mud Wash Rd for 4.0 miles - first west, then NW to Little Finland Rd. Turn right onto LF road traveling back now SE for two miles to the Little Finland parking area. Little Finland extends over about an area of 1.0 mile by 0.3 miles, so aside from the clambering over rocks and shelves, it is fairly easy to see in a small part of a day.

The roads to Little Finland are pretty rugged. A 2WD vehicle can probably make it as long as one doesn't stop in the short sections of sand. But high clearance and good tires are a must. And 4WD will provide some peace of mind.

There are a few formations in Little Finland that have the colorful swirling reminiscent of The Wave in Utah, but these rock formations are generally far more monochromatic.

The formations within Little Finland run a wide range of sizes, with little knobs or thin, ragged sheets projecting out of the surrounding sandstone that might be only a foot tall, to large complex shapes of twisty, cavernous sandstone that can be any size up to tens of feet high.

The sandstone in this r egion has been called both Navajo and Aztec sandstone. Both date back 180 million years to the early Jurassic Age when a large sand sea covered much of the US southwest. However, the correct designation for Little Finland is Aztec sandstone.
