Isle Royale National Park in Lake Superior offers excellent wilderness backpacking. It is somewhat famous for having the largest island on the largest lake on the largest island on the largest fresh water lake in the world. That would be Ryan Island on Siskiwit Lake on Isle Royale in Lake Superior. The island also has the world's longest running predator-prey study on earth. Biologists have been studying the relationship between the island's moose and wolves for over 50 years. Only four other US National Parks are visited less often then Isle Royale, two of those are in the Arctic one in American Samoa, and one in Alaska. Isle Royale is also the only US National Park that closes in winter. Transportation to and from the island is available by boats from Copper Harbor, MI.
