Machu Picchu is known by most people for it picture perfect postcard. Now famous as a tourist destination in the Andes Mountains, it draws tens of thousands of visitors per year. Many of the people that visit here also hike the Inca Trail through the Andes Mountains, arriving at Machu Picchu at the Gate of the Sun - a vantage point offering stunning views down on these ancient ruins. The ruins themselves are high in the Andes Mountains, surrounded by cliffs into deep valleys that rise again into the tall surrounding peaks. The Incan ruins at Machu Picchu are extensive and elaborate. It's easy to spend an entire day exploring the site.

The weather at Machu Picchu changes often and quickly. The ruins are often encased in clouds and fog in the early morning and sometime throughout the day. However, even then, the sight from the Gate of the Sun can be spectacular.

The Inca Trail to Machu Picchu is a one-way hike. This prevents trekkers from passing so many other trekkers and reduces the appearance of crowding on the trail However, I have done this hike twice - in 1998 and 2006 and I can assure you the trail has become much more crowded. Peruvian controls have supposedly set restrictions on the number of trekkers, however they now also control the amount that porters can carry, so there are far more of them.

The 500-year old Incan ruins of Machu Picchu were only re-discoverd in the 1930's. Now nearly fully restored, the site is one of he most popular tourist attractions in Peru, and perhaps in all of South America.

Machu Picchu is located in an absolutely stunningly beautiful setting in the Andes Mountains of Peru. The ruins can be reached by a multi-day trek through the Andes Mountains via the Inca Trail, or by train to the town of Aguas Calientes at the base of the mountains followed by a bus ride up.

The town of Aguas Calientes has little to attract visitors beyond the amazing Machu Picchu. While there, however, one can also visit the local hot springs and the Butterfly Garden.

When I visited Machu Picchu in 2009, I discovered that they had prohibited the use of tripods - very disappointing for photographers.

The Inca Trail was a challenging pleasure in 1998. By 2006, when I did the trek a second time, it was disappointingly dirty and crowded.

Other interesting Incan ruins are found in the Sacred Valley near Machu Picchu in Pisac and Ollentaytambo.
