Yosemite Climber
This photograph of a rock climber was taken in Yosemite National Park in California.
|

Half Dome #26
Half Dome is one of those famous landmarks that defines a place - in this
case, Yosemite National Park in California.
|

Yosemite #5-31
This photo shows some of the colors of autumn at Yosemite National Park - a beautiful
place in every season of the year.
|

Bryce Canyon #75
Bryce Canyon is famous for its beautifully colored and textured sandstone pillars, of which there are hundreds to see
and hike through.
|
Bryce Canyon #72
Bryce Canyon National Park is located only a couple of hours by road from Zion National Park, making it relatively
easy to explore both parks during a vacation.
|

Bryce Canyon #73
Bryce Canyon National Park is one of Utah's many beautiful national parks.
|

Bryce Canyon #79
Bryce is located in the southwestern part of Utah and is located at high enough altitudes that the park does have snow
and ice in the winter and can be quite cold.
|
Bryce Canyon #69
Many of the beautiful views within Bryce can be had from just looking from viewpoints positioned at the rim of the
"amphitheatres" where the beautiful stone pillars exist.
|

Antelope Canyon #8
Tours of Antelope Canyon are given daily by Navajo guides.
|

Antelope Canyon #9
The sunlight bounces back and forth off of the close-spaced red sandstone walls of Antelope Canyon so that by the time
the light reaches the bottom, it has taken on a deep reddish-orange color.
|
Antelope Canyon #2
Antelope Canyon is a beautiful slot canyon located on Navajo land just outside of Page, Arizona. Flash floods have
eroded the canyon walls into smoothly curved undulating shapes, that together with their color produce beautiful effects.
|
Coyote Buttes #12
The area known as Coyote Buttes is under the control of the Bureau of Land Management, which issues permits for hikers to
enter the area.
|
Coyote Buttes #230
There are several specific locations worth visiting in the Coyote Buttes area. I suggest Buckskin Gulch - perhaps the
longest slot canyon in the world - as well as "The Wave", a spectacularly scenic portion of the buttes.
|
Coyote Buttes #244
Some sections of Coyote Buttes are so tightly controlled by the BLM that reservations must be made months in advance.
However, if you haven't planned that far in advance, there is a daily lottery for a limited number of entry passes
valid for the following day.
|
Lone Boat
This lone dory waits in the harbor for the return of a lobster boat and its captain.
|

Upper Lewis Falls #2213
The rocky landscape along the Lewis River was created by volcanic action long ago.
|

Lower Lewis Falls #2171
The beautiful Lewis Falls can be easily seen a short distance from a highway
turn-off in southern Washington.
|

Lower Lewis Falls #2168
The Lewis River falls are truly spectacular and shouldn't be missed if you're
traveling in this part of the U.S.
|

Buckskin Gulch #26
This is a photograph of Buckskin Gulch in Coyote Buttes - a remote area along the border of
Utah and Arizona.
|

Buckskin Gulch #50
Always check the weather forecast before hiking into Buckskin Gulch. This slot canyon can be deadly due to flash
floods after a rain.
|

Buckskin Gulch #52
No technical climbing experience is required to enjoy the beauty of Buckskin Gulch. It's possible to walk to it and
through it without relying upon ropes or rappelling.
|

Windsor Sculpture #1965
Odette Sculpture Park is a great place to walk or rollerblade along the Detroit
River, or just sit back and watch the freighters pass by.
|

Windsor Sculpture #1959
Odette Sculpture Park in Windsor, Ontario, Canada is a beautiful park running
several kilometers along the shore of the Detroit River.
|

Windsor Sculpture #1958
Not only are there excellent views of the Detroit skyline from Windsor, Canada,
but the city has a waterfront park along the Detroit River that is filled
with very nice sculptures.
|

Cottonwood Slot
I discovered this small slot canyon on the west side of Cottonwood Canyon Road in southern Utah.
|

The Wave #259
Using a GPS to navigate within the maze that is Coyote Buttes is helpful for getting near The Wave. But it's of little
value in actually finding it. It is entirely possible to be within a hundred meters of The Wave and not know how to get
to it. But once you've found it, it's straightforward to find it again. The difficulty is finding yourself on the
wrong level of the surround rock. You can hit deadend dropoffs while walking on a fin, or run into deadend walls while
hiking between fins.
|

Artists Palette
There is an area within Coyote Buttes known as "The Wave". This name comes from the wavy shapes of sandstone walls
that look almost like breaking surf on an ocean beach.
|

Swirling Stone
Coyote Buttes is a bit like a fascinating maze of sandstone hills, mounds and fins.
The area deserves the time it takes to explore and discover.
|

Streaks in Stone
There are no trails in this part of Coyote Buttes. But if you took a beeline from the nearest parking lot to "The Wave",
you'd hike about 3 to 3.5 miles one way. If you hiked in this fashion to The Wave, you'd certainly see a lot of great
scenery. But you'd certainly miss a lot too.
|

Waves of Stone
The Wave is both a photographers dream and nightmare. The range texture, color and shape of sandstone here is phenomenal.
Getting correct photographic white balance to produce a photo that accurately reflects reality is a challenge. Every
camera angle seems worthy of a photograph.
|

Mysterious Rocks
These are the mysterious moving rocks of Death Valley that are found in the Racetrack Playa. The Playa is an
ancient dried lakebed that is almost perfectly flat for several miles. These rocks tumble down the slopes of surrounding
hills and then apparently move across the lakebed when the Playa is wet. The evidence of this is that
the pattern of cracks in the mud in the wakes of the rocks are different from the pattern of the cracks in the mud
seen elsewhere on the Playa. No one has ever witnessed these rocks moving, but it's thought that they are blown
by strong winds racing across the Playa.
|

Twenty Mule Team
This is one of the original Twenty Mule Team Borax trains that was used to haul processed borax
out of Death Valley in the 1800's.
|

Sensuous Sand
The windblown sand dunes of Death Valley sometimes take on smooth sensuous curves.
|

Desert Gold
In the spring of 2005, after an unusually wet winter, Death Valley had more wildflowers blooming than have been seen there
in fifty years.
|

Desert Bloom
This is a photograph of Death Valley National Park taken during the profuse wildflower bloom of 2005.
|

Green Beach #88
During a neap tide in Oregon, these rarely exposed rocks covered in seaweed became visible.
|

Green Beach #89
The beach and tidepools along Oregon's coast are fascinating places to visit during an
unusually low tide.
|
Angel Oak
This is a photograph of the Angel Oak tree, just outside of Charleston, SC. It is claimed to be
the largest and oldest Oak tree in North America.
|

Barker Dam
An early morning visit to Barker Dam in Joshua Tree National Park provides a view of a calm and beautiful reflection of
the surrounding boulders.
|

Chollas At Sunset
Joshua Tree National Park has an extensive "garden" of Cholla Cacti.
|

Barker Dam #2701
This is a photo of Barker Dam in Joshua Tree National Park in California.
|
Coyote Buttes #250
Throughout much of Coyote Buttes there aren't really hiking trails. And this works fine because the area is so
beautiful, it's a pleasure to wander and explore and discover beautiful nooks and crannies within the rocks.
|

Joshua Tree Sunset
Joshua Tree National Park is famous for - of course - Joshua Trees. But there are also the interesting Cholla cacti
and some of the most beautiful sunsets to be seen anywhere.
|
Harbor View
Maine is famous for lobster and almost every coastal harbor there is filled with moorings
for lobster boats.
