Rippling Sand
Distances are deceiving in the desert. These sand dunes were several miles from the nearest road.
|

Sand Dune Sunset
The setting sun cast an orange glow across these sand dunes in Death Valley National Park.

Sand #494

Coyote Buttes #3
Coyote Buttes is a remote but beautiful area near the border of Arizona and Utah. It is a section of the Paria River
Canyon and the Vermillion Cliffs Recreation Area that is full of amazing sandstone scenery.
|
Coyote Buttes #17
Coyote Buttes is full of beautifully colored, striated and textured sandstone.
|
Coyote Buttes #4
In the early spring, the arid region known as Coyote Buttes comes alive with beautiful wildflowers.
|
Mysterious Rocks #47
This photograph shows the mysterious moving rocks of Death Valley National Park. These rocks, which clearly move and
leave deep ruts in their wake, are located in a remote region known as the Racetrack Playa, accessible via a long drive
on a 4-wheel drive road. The rocks are thought to move due to very strong winds when this ancient dried lakebed is wet
from very rare periods of rain.

Miners Falls
This is a photograph of part of Miner's Falls, one of the many waterfalls
located in Michigan's Upper Peninsula.
|
Pictured Rocks #36
Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore is located on the northern shores of Michigan's Upper Peninsula. There is a scenic
trail that winds along the Lake Superior shore, sometimes along cliff that is several hundred feet above the lake level,
offering excellent views of deep blue-green water and the colorful cliffs from which this area gets its name.
|
Pictured Rocks #44
Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore is in a relatively remote section of Michigan's Upper Peninsula. A trip here also
deserves some time for exploring the many waterfalls in this part of Michigan.
|
Zion in Mist #100
In the winter, sometimes the Zion Valley walls are clouded in mist.
|
Zion in Mist #101
Zion National Park is colorful, even in the fog. The canyon walls are mostly red with occasional sections covered
in desert varnish.
|
The Narrows #8
When the water flow of the Virgin River passing through Zion National Park becomes slow enough, the park service allows
people into the canyon known as The Narrows. The canyon walls rise over a thousand feet nearly straight vertically
from the river, making this hike one of the most popular in the park.
|
The Narrows #13
The hike through the narrows is a wet one, often requiring wading. Depending upon the water
level in the river, a hiker will spend about half of his or her time wading and the other
half on sand at the base of the tall canyon walls.
|
Observation Point
The hike to Observation Point in Zion National Park is the most strenuous hike in the main portion of the park. But
the hike is worthwhile, providing beautiful views up the canyon.
|
Angels Landing #31
Although Zion National Park is one of the smaller US national parks, it is arguably one of the most beautiful. The
contrast of beautiful red sandstone against a deep blue sky is hard to beat.
|
Zion #32
Zion National Park in Utah is my personal favorite of all US national parks. Zion Valley has some terrific day hikes
and offers spectacular scenery even from a car or bus window.
|
Big Sur #3
Big Sur is a beautiful area of Pacific seashore just a few hours south of San Francisco.
|

Las Vegas #1247
Las Vegas is a beautiful place at night, with so many colored lights. This Las Vegas
nightscape photo was taken at the Paris Las Vegas Resort and Casino.
|

Las Vegas #1248
Las Vegas, Nevada makes an excellent location for taking colorful nightscape photographs.
|

The Renaissance Center
This is the famous Renaissance Center of Detroit - now the GM Building - which has a commanding position
overlooking the Detroit River.
|

Cadillac Mountain #1011
Cadillac Mountain in Acadia National Park consists of beautiful pink granite that in many places is covered with
pretty green lichen.
|
Cadillac Mountain #904
Cadillac Mountain on the coast of Maine and part of Acadia National Park, is often encased in
clouds and fog.
|
Bass Harbor Lighthouse
Bass Harbor Lighthouse on the coast of Maine has been in operation since the mid 1800's.
|
Big Sur #4
The Pacific coast south of San Francisco is absolutely beautiful. Highway 1 along the coast provides many turnoffs
that yield striking views of cliffs falling into beautifully deep blue ocean.
|
Big Sur #7
The views along the Big Sur shoreline constantly change with the weather. If you're visiting San Francisco, this
area deserves a day of exploration.
|
Antelope Canyon #25
Just outside Page, Arizona on Navajo land is this beautiful slot canyon known as Antelope Canyon.
|
Yellowstone Hotspring
This is a photograph of Morning Glory pool, one of the beautiful hot springs of
Yellowstone National Park.
|
Valley of Fire Arch
This is Arch Rock in the Valley of Fire State Park in Nevada.
|
Death Valley 2005
Death Valley is the lowest, hottest, and driest place in North America. It is typically a stark place
with little life revealing itself. In the spring of 2005, Death Valley had more wildflowers
blooming than had been seen there in fifty years.
|
Dunes at Sunset
The sand dunes of Death Valley are at their most beautiful when the sun is low, either at
sunrise or sunset.
|
Buckskin Gulch #53
Buckskin Gulch is thought to be the longest slot canyon in the world. Slot canyons are little more than narrow crevices
through stone mountains. Many slot canyons, Buckskin Gulch included, are susceptible to flash floods that make them
dangerous places after a rain. But these flash floods sculpt the walls of the canyon adding to their interest
and beauty.
|
Buckskin Gulch #44
Buckskin Gulch is located in Coyote Buttes. It's an easy and interesting hike to go through some of Buckskin Gulch,
but too long to make it through in a single day.
|

Pinnacles #362
Pinnacles National Mounument in California is full of unusually shaped boulders that were created by volcanic
activity.
|

Pinnacles #363
Pinnacles National Monument is particularly beautiful in the spring when the sharp contrast between the green
vegetation and boulders is highlighted.
|

Stones in Spring
Pinnacles National Monument rises dramatically out of unlikely surroundings consisting of gently rolling hills,
now covered in vineyards just outside of Soledad, California.
|
Detroit At Night #2
This nightscape photograph of the Detroit skyline was taken from Windsor with the city lights reflected
in the Detroit River.
|
Detroit At Night
This is another nightscape photo of the Detroit skyline.
|

Lower Lewis Falls #2179
An easy trail follows the Lewis River past the lower, middle, and upper Lewis Falls.
|
Buckskin Gulch #51
In some parts of Buckskin Gulch, the walls of this slot canyon are closer together than
the width of an adult's shoulders.
|
Buckskin Gulch #45
Much of Buckskin Gulch lacks the brilliant colors of some slot canyons, but there are places where the wavy textured
walls are colorful and very attractive.
