| Ottawa is the capital of Canada. It's nestled along the Ottawa River, which represents the border between the provinces of Ontario and Quebec. Its neighboring city of Gattineau is across the river and connected to Ottawa by several bridges. Together, these two cities have a population that makes them the fourth largest metropolitan area in Canada. Despite this, there is a distinctly uncrowded aura to Ottawa. The riverfront on both sides of the river is lined with many miles of green space with trails for biking, hiking, rollerblading or enjoying a picnic and view. The city itself also has several pedestrian zones lined with shops and restaurants as well as street artists, mimes, and musicians that provide entertainment. A stroll along Wellington Street also provides great close-up views of the interesting architecture of the government buildings. The Chauteau Laurier is also in this area adjacent to Parliament Hill. | The city of Ottawa is also home to the Ottawa Locks, which raise and lower water levels by a full 24 meters on the Rideau Canal. The Rideau Canal was built in the early 1800's to connect the Ottawa River to Lake Ontario.
