Ribeauville, France dates back to the 8th century. The city was later named after the Ribeaupierre family that
built the three castles that
still stand on a hillside above the town and surrounding countryside. The 13th
century castles - St. Ulrich,
Haut-Ribeaupierre, and Girsberg - can be reached and
explored by a pleasant dayhike up the hillside. The town of Ribeauville is itself picturesque, still
containing some of the ancient fortifications that were built around it during medieval times.
