Riquewihr, France is classified as one of the most beautiful villages in France. And the
classification is well deserved. Its quaint beauty, ancient history, delicious wine, and
abundance of restaurants and cafes make it one of the most
visited towns in the Alsace region of France. The town is rich in history, first mentioned
in written documents dating back to the year 1049. The town itself, was first fortified
in 1291, and some of these medieval fortifications still exist today. Most notably these
include the "Dolder", a 25 meter tall defensive gate built in 1291 and the Thieves Tower,
built in 1335 - reportedly with walls two to five meters thick. Riquewihr is an excellent
place from which to base your explorations of the Alsace wine route. I hope you enjoy
