Seville's ancient old town is the largest in Spain covering almost four square kilometers - one of the three largest in Europe along with Venice and Genoa. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Seville is approximately 3,000 years old. The passage of the various civilizations instrumental in its growth has left the city a distinct personality, and a large and well-preserved historical center. Although it has a strong medieval, renaissance and baroque heritage, the city was greatly influenced by Arabic culture. The walls surrounding the city were originally built during the rule of Julius Caesar, but their current course and design were the result of Moorish reconstructions. The mythological founder of the city is Hercules. This page has photos of the mammoth Cathedral of St. Mary, whic was built from 1401–1519, It is among the largest of all medieval and Gothic cathedrals, in terms of both area and volume. The interior has the longest nave in Spain, and is lavishly decorated, with a large quantity of gold. The Cathedral reused some columns from a pre-existing Mosque - most famously, the Giralda, which was originally a minaret, now a bell tower. This page has photos of the Giralda and the tower's interior, which was built with ramps rather than stairs, so that it could be ascended on horseback to the top. There are also photos here of The Alcázar which faces the cathedral. It was built from a previous Moorish Palace. Construction was started in 1181 and continued for over 500 years. This page also has photos of the Alcazar gardens, which are a blend of Moorish, Renaissance, and English traditions. The Torre del Oro was built as a watchtower and defensive barrier on the river. See photos of Torre del Oro below, as well. A chain was strung through the water from the base of the tower to prevent boats from traveling into the river port. These photos of Seville, Spain and its multitude of antiquities can be viewed in our Slideshow below. See all TheWorldinLight has to offer at Destinations and Topics.
