Split, Croatia has been included in the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites since 1979. The city is old. There is evidence that the area was occupied by the Greeks in the 6th century BC. The city currently still has structures built as part of the Diocletian Palace, which was completed in 305 AD. The Diocletian Palace was built for the retiring Roman Emperor Diocletian. The palace still resides in Split's old town. It covers roughly ten acres and during Diocletian's time, was occupied by anywhere from 8,000 to 10,000 persons. Today, it is full of restaurants, cafes, shops, museums, and homes. It is a vibrant, bustling place that is fun to explore. It's a city well worth a day of exploration and should be considered one of the top travel destinations in Croatia. This page has photos of the city's old Gold Gate and Silver Gate, the Cathedral of St. Duje and its belltower, the Temple of Jupiter, Split's ancient Roman columns and carved stone figures, and the city streets.
