The Tongariro Alpine Crossing is considered to be the best day hike in New Zealand, which is known for many excellent hikes. The steep and strenuous hike passes by spectacular scenery consisting of Mt. Ngauruhoe, Mt. Tongariro, Mt Ruapehu, a number of other craters and the beautiful and aptly named Emerald Lakes and Blue Lake. The area is still geologically active and the smell of sulfur hangs in the air in some locations. For information see Tongariro National Park. This page has photos taken throughout the Tongariro Crossing, including photos of Mt. Ngauruhoe, Mt. Tongariro, Mt. Ruapehu, the Emerald Lakes, and Blue Lake.
