Although not unique to Tournissan, the tree-lined road that enters Tournissan is particularly beautiful. These "tree tunnels"
common feature in towns throughout the Languedoc region of France. It is said that Napolean ordered these trees
planted to provide shade to his troops as they marched through France. Many of these tree-lined entrances to French towns
and villages are threatened on two counts. First, the trees are suffering from diseases brought to France by foreign
tropps during World War II. Also, the high rate of highway deaths in France, many of which are drivers colliding with
