Photos of Utah

Utah has some of the most dramatic scenery in the USA. A number of the country's most beautiful national parks are there, including Zion, Bryce Canyon, Arches, and Canyonlands, which are scattered across the entire southern width of the state. In addition to these spectacular national parks, Utah has scenic destinations that are separate and distinct from the parks, but are themselves becoming famous for their natural beauty. These include places like "The Wave" and Buckskin Gulch, both in Coyote Buttes. If you're interested in exploring the natural beauty of Utah, I'd recommend any of Michael Kelsey's several books on the canyons of Utah. One of these is "Hiking and Exploring the Paria River". The Narrows #8
When the water flow of the Virgin River passing through Zion National Park becomes slow enough, the park service allows people into the canyon known as The Narrows. The canyon walls rise over a thousand feet nearly straight vertically from the river, making this hike one of the most popular in the park.

The Narrows #13
The hike through the narrows is a wet one, often requiring wading. Depending upon the water level in the river, a hiker will spend about half of his or her time wading and the other half on sand at the base of the tall canyon walls.

Observation Point
The hike to Observation Point in Zion National Park is the most strenuous hike in the main portion of the park. But the hike is worthwhile, providing beautiful views up the canyon.

Angels Landing #31
Although Zion National Park is one of the smaller US national parks, it is arguably one of the most beautiful. The contrast of beautiful red sandstone against a deep blue sky is hard to beat.

Zion #32
Zion National Park in Utah is my personal favorite of all US national parks. Zion Valley has some terrific day hikes and offers spectacular scenery even from a car or bus window.

Zion in Mist #100
In the winter, sometimes the Zion Valley walls are clouded in mist.

Zion in Mist #101
Zion National Park is colorful, even in the fog. The canyon walls are mostly red with occasional sections covered in desert varnish.

Canyon and Mountain #3292
Snow Canyon is not as stunning as Zion or Bryce, its larger national park brothers. But it is a scenic and interesting place that is certainly worth a visit.

Canyon Walls #3311
There are miles and miles of relatively easy hiking trails that wind throughout Snow Canyon State Park.

Snow Canyon #3290
There is one long stone arch in Snow Canyon, located on one of the trails that closes begining in early March.

Cottonwood Slot Canyon
I discovered this small slot canyon on the west side of Cottonwood Canyon Road in southern Utah.

Bryce Canyon #73
Bryce Canyon National Park is one of Utah's many beautiful national parks.

Bryce Canyon #75
Bryce Canyon is famous for its beautifully colored and textured sandstone pillars, of which there are hundreds to see and hike through.

Bryce Canyon #79
Bryce is located in the southwestern part of Utah and is located at high enough altitudes that the park does have snow and ice in the winter and can be quite cold.

Bryce Canyon #69
Many of the beautiful views within Bryce can be had from just looking from viewpoints positioned at the rim of the "amphitheatres" where the beautiful stone pillars exist.

Bryce Canyon #72
Bryce Canyon National Park is located only a couple of hours by road from Zion National Park, making it relatively easy to explore both parks during a vacation.

Lava and Mountains #3260
Snow Canyon is a Utah state park just outside of St. George.

Black Lava #3318
Snow Canyon is littered with black volcanic boulders that rest in stark contrast to the reddish-orange hills of Navajo sandstone that rise around them.

Lava Boulders #3298
Snow Canyon also has lava tube caves that can be explored. Don’t forget to bring your flashlights, you’ll need them to explore these caves.

Orange Mountains #3265
Care must be exercised when visiting the lava tube caves. Some have very deep holes that could easily be fallen into.

Sandstone Desert #3287
Some of the hiking trails are closed from the early spring until late fall, so if there are particular areas that you want to visit, be sure to plan your trip at the right time of the year.

Coyote Buttes #12
The area known as Coyote Buttes is under the control of the Bureau of Land Management, which issues permits to allow a very limited number of hikers per day.

Coyote Buttes #230
There are several areas worth visiting in the Coyote Buttes area, including Buckskin Gulch - perhaps the longest slot canyon in the world - and "The Wave", a spectacularly scenic portion of the buttes.

Coyote Buttes #244
Some sections of Coyote Buttes are so popular and so tightly controled by the BLM that reservations must be made months in advance. However, if you haven't planned that far in advance, there is a daily lottery for a limited number of permits that are valid for the following day.

Buckskin Gulch #45
Much of Buckskin Gulch lacks the brilliant colors of some slot canyons, but there are places where the wavy textured walls are colorful and very attractive.
