Coyote Buttes South is similar to Coyote Buttes North except it doesn't have the famous formations known as The Wave. But the beautiful teepees, hoodoos, color, shape and texture is also present in Coyote Buttes South. One very notable difference between the two regions is the level of difficulties in reaching them. Coyote Buttes North is reached by a relatively easy drive, high vehicle clearance and 4WD is not necessary. However, the walk to the wave is a minimum six-mile roundtrip, moderately difficult hike. On the other hand, Coyote Buttes South definitely requires both high vehicle clearance and 4WD capability. The roads in have long stretches of deep sand and occassional places with large stone/boulders that must be crossed. But the hike to many of the interesting rock formations from trailheads is shorter than the comparable hike to The Wave.
